My title for this blog is the most ambitious yet ! So here goes.
We deal in real property. Real property has always been recognized as a thing of Value. Many of you read The Good Earth in School. It was the land that made the poor serf Olan I think was his name rich. The down fall of the family that was foreshadowed in the end of the Pearl Bucks book saw his children selling off the land. Land and real property has recognized real value !
This leads us to Willy Sutton whose big claim to fame was the immortal line when asked, "Why do you rob Banks?" Ans. "Because that's where the money is." Government today is Willy Sutton when it comes to real property. We had income tax in 1912 but property tax well before that. Schools are in large part supported by property tax. Going way back Feudal Lords rewarded Knights with property. Even in Florida a State that boast no income tax property tax is big. In fact you are even taxed differently if you have a second home in the State. Government is always looking for new ways to tax property. Try to get reassessed DOWNWARD in a slumping market and experience the joy. Government recognizes property as a source of revenue and they want it. They are constantly attacking, taxing, and working out ways to limit your rights as a private property owner. So Government is really the Willy Sutton of today when it comes to real property and our rights.
Enter an idea, new business cards and a movement. Realtors champion the rights of individuals to own and use real property. Let me say that again, Realtors champion the rights of individuals to own and use real property. Our National, NAR and local ,in my case GAR Associations are the mechanism we do this through. When the Supreme court issued it's wonderful eminent domain decision in a Connecticut case it was Georgia Association of Realtors that championed the change here that was used as a model nationally to check Eminent Domain for economic use. With all due respect to the banking members of Active Rain you do not belong in Real Estate as Realtors. This would create a huge conflict of interest. That conflict, in my opinion, would work to the detriment of private property owners. So we as Realtors champion the rights of private property owners in many many ways through our PACS.
One of our big problems is image. So here is the idea, the change, and hopefully the movement. On my next set of business cards I am adding to the back Charlie Ragonesi Realtor, Serving and Protecting the rights of Property Owners. I am going to underline the word protecting. I want to start a dialogue with my prospect. When asked about protecting I am going to say ,Eminent domain, Banks out, and locally here an issue we defeated to make people retrofit pipes at a closing. (at someone other than the legislatures expense.) You can do this do by incorporating a local issue. The idea is to be seen as folks that make a living in real estate but also contribute, through dues or contributions to organizations that protect the rights of private property. Think about it . You can be seen as a protector of the rights of private property owners. How many of your prospects, or you for that matter view yourself in that way? Sure you see yourself as adding value, which is very important. But as a protector? So if we make one little change like saying some where we serve and protect the rights of private property I really really believe we can change the way we are viewed. WHAT DO YOU THINK ?
